Near South Planning Board (NSPB) hosted its 25th Annual Young Authors Ceremony at the Printers Row Lit Fest, Sunday, June 9, 2019. The ceremony honored 25 developing writers and illustrators in the K-8th grade levels who were winners of a Chicago Public School’s (CPS) Young Authors’ Competition for outstanding manuscripts. Guest speakers included Mrs. Mary Kate Witry, Chicago Public School Librarian and Media Specialist, and Illinois author, Debbi Chocolate, of Neate to the Rescue! Several winners were able to read from their books to a captive audience. Each winner enthusiastically received a certificate of achievement and a copy of a writer’s guide from F+W Media, gift cards to Powell’s Bookstore, Lou Malnati’s Pizza, Gordo’s Ice Cream and gifts from Luster Products. Winners also received backpacks/gift bags filled with t-shirts, art supplies, and other items from DePaul University, and Robert Morris University. We also had raffle prizes and autographed books by author, Debbi Chocolate. Following the ceremony, the children and their families were treated to lunch & refreshments at Jones College Prep.
